Lots To Do In Snowmass This Summer

Snowmass Village Announces 2008 Summer Event Schedule
Fifth anniversaries and new events highlight the summer calendar

Snowmass Village, CO... Spring 2008– Snowmass Village is pleased to announce its complete summer line-up of festivals and events for 2008. There’s never been a better time to “Take 5” in Snowmass as multiple events celebrate five year anniversaries. The Aspen/Snowmass season kicks off in June with the popular 5th Annual Chili Pepper & Brew Fest. Massive Music, The Snowmass Wellness Experience, Oktoberfest, and Ride for the Cure also celebrate fifth anniversaries.

“This is a strong and diverse summer schedule and we’re thrilled to be offering so many different events for visitors and locals,” says Susan Hamley, Marketing Director for Snowmass Village. “From our new calendar additions to those events celebrating anniversaries to the incredible music we offer all summer long, this is by far our strongest schedule yet.”

Snowmass is home to three new events this season. In June, the PDGA-sanctioned Snowmassive Disc Golf Open takes players up for 54 holes of on-mountain play. In August, the Snowmass Gravity Enduro Race offers a challenging ten hours of mountain biking down Snowmass’ slopes and a special new outdoor concert by a major national act. This event replaces the Snowmass National, which organizer Blue Wolf Events chose not to return to Snowmass.

“We were honored to have a great run with the Nationals competition and did everything we could to keep the event,” says Snowmass Village Marketing & Special Events representative Dave Elkan. “This gravity race will bring a whole new kind of exciting mountain bike challenge to Snowmass.”

During this weekend event and the annual Blast the Mass, the Snowmass chairlift to Sam’s Knob will be open for the first time ever in the summer. The competition winner is the rider who accumulates the most vertical feet descended over two five-hour heats using any trail down the mountain.

The third and final new event is the Snowmass 12-Hour Bike Race, which is a fundraiser for the Aspen Youth Center and Extreme Sports Camp. This dawn-to-dusk race on Snowmass’ beautiful fall trails is modeled after (and excellent training for) the 24 Hours of Moab in October.

To Extend, Or Not To Extend [the ski season]

Will Skico Brass Say Thanks, Season Pass Holders? Or Stick With The Season Closing Schedule As Normal?

Aspen Ski company brass are weighing the possibility of extending the ski season past the scheduled closing dates of April 13 for Aspen and Snowmass, April 6 for Highlands.

Dave Perry, Skico V.P., Mountain Division, told the Aspen Times that management is discussing the possibility of extending the season, and that at this point, it is only being considered.

The basis of a potential season extention is all the snow this year, that it will last well past the time when skiers will want to ski. The base this week is 108 inches; ten foot cumulative stats are on record this winter.

Perry speculates the business drop off after April 13 is not the singular factor pivotal to this idea of extending; staying open an extra week or two would be kind of a Thank You to Aspen/Roaring Fork season pass holders.

Extended Lift Hours For Select Lifts

The hours of some chairlifts will stay open longer until the season ends. As of Feb. 16 the following lifts began operating until 4 p.m.: Silver Queen Gondola and Ajax Express at Aspen Mountain; Village Express, Big Burn and Elk Camp at Snowmass; Exhibition and Cloud 9 at Aspen Highlands; and Summit Express and Panda Peak at Buttermilk. All other lifts close at regular times.

February 17, 2008

Free Rock Concert In Snowmass

Southern rockers, North Mississippi Allstars, will put on a free concert, Sunday, Feb. 17, at 6:30 p.m.

The band will play at the end of the Snowmass Village Mall as part of the free Bud Light Hi-Fi Concert Series, five outdoor concerts in Aspen and Snowmass held during key events and peak weekends throughout the season.

The band is headed up by guitarist and singer, Luther Dickinson, known for "Eyes," "Meet Me in the City," "Shake 'Em On Down," and "Hurry Up Sunrise." Dickinson's brother and drummer, Cody, and longtime friend Chris Chew on bass, make up
the trio.

North Mississippi Allstars recently released their fifth studio album, "Hernando."

There will be more concerts March 23 in Snowmass and March 28 in Aspen.

Super Diamond puts on free concert on March 21 in downtown Aspen.

Get High On Fridays; "Big Air Fridays" Is Back!

"Big Air Fridays" returned to Fanny Hill at Snowmass on Friday, February 15.

The action starts at 2 p.m. every Friday and will "fly" through April 4. Spectators can expect to see fourty minutes, or so, of jumping. Boarders and skiers perform jumps for the judges, then judges pick four skiers and four boarders to show their stuff in a finale to determine the best of show and top of $300.00. Second place pulls in a cool $150, third place pays $75, twelve bucks short of a days' lift ticket price.

Top point awards by the end of the series picks up an extra $500.

To take part in all the lofty action, Big Air hopefulls have to have competed in a past Big Air event, or, pulled a Big Air jump at Snowmass and been seen by a member of the Snowmass ski patrol, who acts as a witness to your super-abilities in the air.

Live music on the Snowmass mall will round out the event each Friday from 3-4:30 p.m. Hang around until 7:00 p.m. ant watch fireworks over Fanny Hill light up the night sky!

SnowMass Shows Off Extreme Side of The Mountain With New Website

Extreme and Freeriding Website From Snowmass Debuts

Snowmass has launch a new website that showcases the other, lesser known parts of its vast 3,128 acres.

Known as the "intermediate" mountain more geared to family skiing, Snowmass Village officials want to let free-riders and steep-and-deep daredevils know about the mountain's more intimidating terrain with its new website, lauched this winter. Snowmass Mountain is the second largest in the state.

The new website, designed by Promotional Concepts and maintained by Blue Tent Marketing, is divided into three areas: Parks & Pipes, Freeride and Backcountry.

In easy-on-the-eyes and glorious red, white and black, take a look at www.snowmassfreeride.com.

Kids' "Treehouse" Opens at Snowmass

25,000-square-foot Treehouse Kids' Adventure Center Opens at Snowmass

Treehouse Kids' Adventure Center

This winter, Aspen Skiing Company unveiled The Treehouse Kids' Adventure Center at Snowmass base village. This $17 million project is the largest capital project the company has developed in its history and opened in November for the 2007-2008 season.

Snowmass has undergone a renaissance in the last two years with on-mountain and ski area facility improvements, totaling over $45 million (including summer 2007). Improvements include the Village Express six-pack lift and Sky Cab gondola in the 2005-2006 season and the Elk Camp Gondola in the 2006-2007 season. For the 2007-2008 season the new Elk Camp Meadows beginner's area debuted at the top of the Elk Camp Gondola with a new quad chair, two new surface lifts and six acres of terrain exclusively dedicated to beginners. The entire base village project is slated for completion in 2011.

The focal point of the new Snowmass base village development is the two-story, 25,000-square-foot Treehouse Kids' Adventure Center located at the intersection of the three new lifts on Fanny Hill.

As the focal point for kids' programming at Aspen/Snowmass, The Treehouse stands as the first of its kind in the snowsports industry, boasting a family-friendly climbing gym, teen activities, kids' retail and a host of themed rooms for ages eight weeks and older. The Treehouse is easily accessible from anywhere in Snowmass with short-term and underground parking, free shuttle buses, ski-in/ski-out access on Fanny Hill and service to the upper slopes, lodges and Snowmass Village Mall via the Sky Cab gondola. In addition, Ski & Snowboard Schools check-in, rental, retail and family après entertainment are consolidated all under one roof.

"The Treehouse Kids' Adventure Center in Snowmass is the centerpiece of the renaissance of Snowmass and will take the family experience to an entirely new level," said David Perry, Senior Vice President, Mountain Division, Aspen Skiing Company. "This interactive facility will combine the award winning Ski & Snowboard Schools of Aspen/Snowmass with a children's museum-like playground, giving kids a one-of-a-kind journey while offering parents convenience and ease."

"This facility is linked to a system of seven new lifts, including kid-friendly gondolas and magic carpets, to provide a seamless on-mountain learning experience for people of all ages and levels," continued Perry. "Next winter's Elk Camp Meadows beginner's area at the top of the Elk Camp Gondola will provide a centralized and exclusive section of the mountain for beginners of all ages."

Location

Conveniently located in the new base village, The Treehouse is easily accessible from anywhere in Snowmass with parking, free shuttle buses, and ski-in/ski-out access via the Village Express quad chairlift, The Elk Camp Gondola and to the upper village by way of the Sky Cab gondola.
Treehouse Kids' Adventure Center

Experience

As the new hub of ski and snowboard learning, The Treehouse brings the outdoors inside, inviting children to begin their alpine journey through hands-on, interactive activities. Whether nestled in the colorful Butterfly Room, wriggling in the Fox Den, jumping in Trout Haven or crawling through Beaver Lodge, each room's design is tailored for a specific age group.
Eagle Peak
A wide open, multi-purpose room will be the center of activity for families and kids of all ages. It will house the rental shop, overnight ski/snowboard storage, full kitchen and cafeteria, and a large space for group entertainment such as themed teen and family nights. Eagle Peak is located on the plaza level with direct access to the slopes. The convertible roof will be used for an après and evening activity zone.
The Alpine Climb Room
Features a custom-designed children's museum, Aspen Leaf Climber and Nature Shack. This room gives children the opportunity to climb and explore, exercising their bodies and minds while focusing on the mountain environment and the area's mining history.
The Bear Den
Designed specifically for three- and four-year-olds, hosts a puppet show theater, a napping loft and offers age-appropriate interactive games.

And The Survey Says...

ResortQuest Aspen/Snowmass and the Inn At Aspen want to know:

Were you here for the ESPN X Games at Buttermilk Mountain this year? Tell us about it.

What did you like about it? What did you not like about it?

Did you stay at the Inn At Aspen at the base of Buttermilk Mountain?

Have you or your family stayed at the Inn At Aspen before?

What did you like about it? Or not like?

What is your favorite ski run? Which mountain?

Have you skied Highland Bowl? How many times have made the hike up to the bowl?

What is your favorite restaurant in Aspen?

Are you a single boarder or double? (skier)

How would you rate Aspen, lift ticket prices, transportation around town, nightlife,
friendliness of locals, lifties, ambassadors, food at on-mountain restaurants, as compared to other resorts you have visited?

Did you have ski or board lessons while on vacation? Ski? Snowboard? Group or individual lesson? Which mountain and for how many hours/days?

Did your lesson or lessons make you a better skier? How?

Have you taken any of the newly introduced "Bumps for Boomers" lessons offered by Aspen Snowmass Ski School to older skiers who avoid steep runs and moguls? Did it change your outlook on skiing this kind of terrain? How?

Do you have survey questions you would like to add to this survey? What are they?

Thanks!

Chamber Announces February To-Do Line Up, "Celebrity Downhill"
On 29th

Like chocolate? Check out the Chocolate Classic at Hotel Jerome on the 6th. How about a lecture on condensed matter at the Wheeler House on the 6th. I know some people who are condensed matter, and don't know it. But it sounds like fun. Now, if I can only postulate how to un-condense some of those more rutted out bumps on Percy's in March.... Watch celebrities ski at Aspen Mountain on the 29th for "Celeb Downhill Weekend." Jack Nicholson may be doing some flips on Dipsy this year.

Here's what's happening in and around town for February 2008. (There are 29 days in February this year, for those you who think that kind of thing has any value. Of course! One more Feb ski day.)
Schedule supplied by the Aspen Chamber Resort Association and reprinted herein as received.
